Fathers day gifts – presents for dads Read Other Father's Day Comments
What sort of things do you always buy for your Dad each Fathers Day? Do you always arrive at the regular choices of socks or scorched almonds or a car wash voucher? We would love to hear from you about what are your favourite presents for dads, by sending us an email, you can go in our draw for a fabulous Father’s day present. Congratulations to Annemarie, of Ashburton, Canterbury for winning the Father's day gift draw, which she will give to her 86 year old Dad.Thank you to all of you who have entered into our draw.
When we grew up there wasn’t lots of extra dollars to be spent on mother’s and father’s day, so we were always encouraged to do jobs that Dad would have to do on the day, such as chopping the kindling for the fire, bringing in the firewood and stacking it in to the wood box, running the dogs and feeding them, and cleaning the car. We could never manage to get up and get Dad breakfast in bed for father's day, because he was always first up, very early with the kitchen fire lit, the jug boiled and the toast cooking, before we ever managed to get ourselves out of bed. However Dad's favourite gift was always chocolates, which he never seemed to tire of. Click here to see our selection.
The special things that we always did as a family was to have our evening meal in the lounge, and on a Sunday night we would have the open fire burning, which Dad really enjoyed. We would have mousetraps (cheese toasties) and soup and cakes (that used to remind Mum of her “high teas” when she was growing up) and we would spend time singing around the piano (I think that we kind of thought of ourselves as the budding Von Trappe family, from The Sound of Music!!). This was a wonderful treat, as we had no television.
Our father was very much of the generation, where he was the head of the house and made the decisions accordingly. He worked very long and hard on the farm, but he always supported us with school pets day, by arriving with all the pet lambs, cats in cages and the dogs. He loved young children and always played with them, pushing them on the swings, and slides, making wooden things with them and encouraged his grandchildren as they grew up.
My Dad passed away May 2002 and life as I knew it changed forever. He was a friendly person, who loved sharing a joke with people and who always succeeded in chatting with everyone whom he came in contact with.
To those of you, like me, who are now without a parent or both, who would like to share your Father’s Day memories, we would love to hear about them.
Remembering your Dad on Father’s Day, whether he is with you in person or in spirit and mind is a really wonderful feeling. For those of you who are still fortunate to still have your dad. it is easy to make or create presents for dads, such as a picture frame for the fridge with a magnet on the back of this, a card with your special choice of words or your special fathers poem for Dad, or you could make some homemade fudge or biscuits, make and decorate a box and present these goodies wrapped for Dad. Life is full of choices and you can choose to give your Dad a gift from the heart, that doesn't have to cost a fortune, because you only have one Dad and you have to make the most of that.
Remember we would love to hear about your favourite father’s day story, or present that you have given your Dad.
I love you Dad and miss you heaps, happy Father’s Day forever.
Your Loving daughter, Diane
