Dad’s 60th Birthday Surprise Party

Have you planned and arranged a surprise birthday party, this can be lots of fun for everyone?  This was our family experience of setting up a surprise birthday party.

When it came time for my Dad’s 60th birthday surprise party, it turned out to be just that.  Mum had it all planned out right under his nose, and the amazing thing was that he didn’t suspect a thing.  She carefully wrote out his 60 birthday invitations telling all the relies and friends that it was a surprise and not to let on to Jim. After she had sent the invitations off, she would race down the drive every day as the mailman arrived to deliver the mail, to make sure that she intercepted all the returned acceptance slips.

We carefully planned and baked all the food, which included meringues, pavlova, sponge kisses, a birthday cake and sausage rolls and savories and of course his favourites, brandy snaps and lamingtons. We had it cooling in all sorts of funny places, and because it was summertime, we had to be extra careful to get it cooled and packed away before the flies settled on it. We stored the drinks away carefully so that Dad couldn’t find them, or that could have ruined the surprise.

What was amazing was on the night, we were casually sitting around the lounge, and each one of us would take a turn to slip away and get changed into our party clothes.  We whipped up cream and laid out chips and dips and still he didn’t guess.  All the party guests assembled out at our front driveway, and at the appointed hour, they all drove in convoy up our drive.  I’ll never forget Dad’s face as he stood watching from the lounge window, wondering and thinking out loud to us, “who on earth this could be?”  You can imagine the look of surprise and delight on his face when he arrived out of the house, as we had quickly set up the tables, swung up some coloured lights and the party was underway.  He was actually speechless and for anyone who knew my Dad, he was never speechless.

He rushed away to change into his tidy clothes and he was continuously saying to us, “how did we manage to get things all organized, without him seeing or noticing anything?”  That was the pleasure of teamwork and distraction to arrange his 60th birthday surprise party without him suspecting anything.  We baked him a yummy chocolate cake which he and all our family and friends enjoyed.  He even managed a delightful speech, which was full of emotion and pride.

Planning a surprise birthday party takes some early and careful planning.   We were lucky because we had plenty of space at our home and as it was summertime, we could spread inside and outside, so that everyone could relax and enjoy themselves.  There was never a problem with music, laughter, loudness or anything else, as our nearest neighbours lived some distance away over the road.  In summertime if you are preparing your own food, you do need to be careful of keeping your foods in the fridge for as long as possible to prevent any food poisoning or any other problems.  By getting Dad’s 60 birthday invitations away early, meant that people had time to plan and arrange where they were going to stay, as some of the guests travelled 1½ hours to be there. What an occasion it was, and I know that it was all worthwhile, as Dad really loved it.

Do you need to find some good 60 birthday surprise invitations?
